I was recently at my local Michael’s store trying to find inspiration for my next craft project. I came to the acrylic paint section and thought about how I haven’t touched acrylic paints in years, so, I thought why not now? I then had the idea to do some sort of project that involved paint splattering because, well, it’s just plain fun and it looks super cute! And OMG–I absolutely LOVE how these DIY ombre splatter paint tumblers turned out! I went in sort of winging it but I don’t think they could have turned out any better than they did! And the best part is, with a little preparation, these are seriously easy to make. So let’s get to it!
DIY: Ombre Paint Splatter Wine Tumblers
PART ONE: HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THE PAINT SPLATTER PART:
- stemless wine tumblers like these, however, I got mine from the Dollar Tree–SO much cheaper!
- white matte spray paint
- clear acrylic coating spray
- acrylic paint (color of your choosing)
- paint brushes in various sizes
- a plate you don’t mind getting paint on (I used a paper one)
- tarp, newspapers or a large cardboard box (something to use as a barrier when you are spraying and flinging paint 🙂 )
Place glass upside down. Completely cover with spray paint. Let dry.
Place a good amount of paint onto the plate as you’ll want it to be pretty thick on the brush when you go to fling it. Scoop up some paint with the brush (here is where you can experiment with different brush sizes to get varying sizes of splatters), tap the brush towards the glass with your fingers to fling the paint. You may find you have to tap pretty hard. It’s ok if it’s not “perfect”. That’s what makes these so fun is that they are completely unique!
OK, PART TWO! HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR THE OMBRE PART:
Note: I used this tutorial from The Crafted Life to make my own spray paint (I think using this method yields better results as I did try to get an ombre effect using regular spray paint and I wasn’t happy with the results.)
- acrylic paint (you can use the same color you used for the paint splatter or a different one–it’s up to you how creative you want to get!)
- 2-ounce spray bottle (I got mine from the Dollar Tree)
- rubbing alcohol
Make your spray paint by filling up half of your spray bottle with equal parts water and rubbing alcohol. Next, add your paint. The more you add, the more saturated the color will be.
Once the paint splatter is dry, flip your glass right-side-up this time. This will help create the ombre effect. Spray the paint at a downward angle starting about 3/4 the way up all around the cup. When you are happy with the look, let dry.
Once all paint is dry, spray with clear acrylic sealant. Once dry, your glasses should be safe to use. Hand-wash with a soft cloth in warm water.
That’s it! Now go show off your super adorable, and completely unique DIY ombre paint splatter tumblers!
