I am an avid thrift store shopper. I just LOVE finding things that I can repurpose into something entirely new, and don’t even get me started on ALL of the cute clothes I find at a fraction of the price they would cost brand new. Since I love thrifting, naturally, I’m on the Savers email list. The other day I received an email announcing that they are partnering with JoAnn for a DIY contest using thrifted items. So, OF COURSE, I had to participate. I combined my love for plants and thrifting in this project–a flower planter that I made from a vase and a mixing bowl! And, I definitely have to mention that I was extremely inspired by A Kailo Chic’s Gradient Planter DIY so be sure to check her’s out, too!

Here’s the how-to: DIY: Thrift Store Flower Planter (out of a vase + mixing bowl)

STEP 1:

Glue the vase to the bottom of the bowl. Let dry until sturdy.

STEP 2:

Once fully dry, spray paint your new piece. Let dry. Feel free to get as creative as you want with this part! I stayed pretty basic, though I think I will experiment with colored sand the next time I do this. I think a hot pink sand with a cute little cactus would be amazing for this project 🙂

STEP 3:

Once the paint is dry, fill the bottom of the bowl with a layer of rocks for drainage since there aren’t any holes in the bottom of the bowl.

STEP 4:

Lastly, fill with dirt and arrange your plants how you like them.

I just LOVE how this thrift store flower planter (out of a vase + mixing bowl) turned out. It makes a great indoor or outdoor accent piece! If you do plan to keep yours outdoors, be sure to spray it with an acrylic sealant so that the paint won’t chip.

I seriously love thrift store craft projects. It allows for true creativity to thrive and plus, it’s helping the environment by keeping items out of landfills. Be sure to follow along with the contest on instagram using the hashtag #howireuse. Hopefully, this project inspired you to go out and create your own to enter! Enjoy 🙂
